Gerald Ross -- Workshops
Introduction to Swing Ukulele (Level 1 – 3) Intermediate It must have been “MoonGlow” that made the ‘ukulele perfect for swing—the songs that made the 1930s and 1940s the Golden Age of American Music. In this two-day workshop, Gerald Ross will teach you how to get the feel of swing in your playing through closed-position chord shapes and proper right and left hand rhythm techniques. You will take a familiar swing tune and convert the basic open-string chords to more interesting closed-string voicings. You will also explore chord substitutions for basic chord progressions. This is a two-day workshop with the second day building on skills and techniques learned on the first day. Be sure to bring a tuner, paper, pencil, extra strings and some type of recording device. An audio–or better yet, a video–recorder will help you further your studies after you return home. Swing—Stepping It Up (Level 3 – 4) Advanced

Ken Middleton BLUEGRASS WORKSHOP In this 90 minute workshop Ken will examine several different ways of playing bluegrass music on a ukulele. This will include finger-style, strumming and flat-picking (without a pick). Many of the main techniques used in bluegrass playing like hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends and slides will be carefully demonstrated and you will all be using them in no time. Ken will also be looking at the similarities between the skills needed for performing bluegrass and Celtic music e.g. playing using campanella voicing. You will get the chance to develop new skills through playing actual pieces of music that Ken has specially arranged for this session. If time permits, there may be opportunity to perform a four-part piece together as a group. For this class participants will need to have an understanding of how to read either tab or conventional notation. Please bring along a ukulele (soprano, concert, or tenor) with standard A D F# B re-entrant (high A) tuning. Intermediate to Advanced |
